ABOUT

I am a forester based in Northern California, but I spend as much time as I can exploring and photographing remote regions of California and beyond. I was born and raised at the northern tip of California’s Central Valley, and have lived up and down the coast, in Oregon, and briefly on the East Coast of the U.S. I have found myself in the Humboldt Bay region of the north coast for the last decade, and see it as a truly awe-inspiring place. My passion for photography was a seed planted early in life. Over time, that seed has grown slowly, sometimes sporadically, and has been nourished by many other interests in life.

My images are a product of the time spent in the places I work and play, and my attempt to share that perspective with other people. I prefer to focus my energy on the remote regions of where I call home and the places I travel to. My intent, though always evolving, is to capture the constant change on dynamic landscapes that many people don’t have the time or patience to observe for themselves. I am driven by the desire to find subjects that have not been visited by many people, moments missed by the masses. In many cases, I find myself in a constant state of repetition, returning to the same locations over and over, observing fluctuations through the seasons, and finding subjects that come and go on the landscape.

Artists Statement

As a self-taught photographer, with no formal training, I see myself as more of a documentarian, recording my observations of the ever-changing environment around me. I am fascinated by bodies of work, which tell a story over a lifetime. Creating images over a long period of time and being able to reflect and evolve based on these creative products is a secret ingredient of life. Photography unlocks a perspective on the ordinary that can put you in a mind-altering state, seeing things around you in a new light. In my work, I am drawn to dynamic landscapes, such as river systems, forests, and the industrial landscape, with varying rates of change at different paces and scales. The majority of my images are monochromatic, which works out well, given my generally unreliable sense of color (apparently, I am partially color blind). This style of imagery lends itself well to my favorite subjects, emphasizing lines, form, texture, and light in the natural environment. Thank you for taking the time to view my work and support my love for this medium.
